Ice Cream Wedding Ideas

Fun fact, July is National Ice Cream Month, a celebration designated in 1984 to honor America’s coolest dessert. The third Sunday in July is also designated as National Ice Cream Day, this year falling on Sunday, July 20th, 2025, with ideal conditions for a Sunday sundae!

Less Cake, More Dessert Stations 🍪

The last bite before kicking off happily ever after is changing, and wedding desserts are more creative and tempting than ever. Lots of couples are ordering a small cake for photos only, with some doing away with the cake altogether. With Made by Meg Catering, we’ve loved getting new and non-traditional requests for a couple’s favorite dessert, and recently we’ve catered dessert stations focused around churros, ice cream, and cookies.

Creative Late-Night Ice Cream 🍨

Late night snacks have been replaced by late night ice cream and ice cream cookie sandwich carts. Guests love a surprise and delight moment toward the end of the night – especially when it’s a sweet one with their favorite toppings.

The most wonderful place for a couple to customize a menu item is through their late-night desserts, adding in creativity, fun, and personalization. There are a variety of ways ice cream is incorporated into the dessert menu at events, ranging from ice cream cookie sandwiches to floats to ice cream sundaes.

At weddings hosted at La Venta Inn, the ice cream cart is typically rolled out 15-30 minutes after the cake cutting, and available for guests to enjoy during a designated one-hour block. Ice cream at weddings requires a server attendant to avoid any messes or melting, as service needs to be more intentional and efficient than the traditional cake, which can be professionally sliced, plated, and then left around a cake table unattended.

Ideal for warm summer months, our top 3 most popular ice cream carts making their own grand entrance at events include:

1. The gourmet ice cream cookie sandwich cart, with our attendants assembling your customizable gourmet ice cream sandwich with freshly baked cookies. During the menu planning phase, couples and planners choose their personal favorite ice cream flavor and 3 different types of cookies. At the event, attendees have nostalgic fun selecting their personal combination of their two favorite available cookies and the couple’s pre-selected ice cream in the middle.

A few of our most popular cookies include:

  • Meg’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Cookies
  • White Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut
  • Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
  • Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookies

2. To have & to hold, ice cream in a cup: For guests who would prefer a single cookie option, we also provide cups to hold their choice of ice cream, topped with their favorite cookie!

Couples and planners choose the ice cream flavor in advance, with our most popular selections including:

  • Chocolate
  • Vanilla Bean
  • Strawberry
  • Mint Chip
  • Cookies & Cream

3. Ice cream sundae station: For couples looking to skip on whole cookies and focus on highlighting the ice cream and signature toppings, personalized takes on traditional classic sundaes have been popular as well. For the Ice Cream Sundae Station, couples and planners choose their 3 personal favorite ice cream flavors, along with a variety of ice cream toppings, to have available for guests at the event.

A few of our most-popular toppings to mix-and-match include:

  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Crumbled cookies
  • Coconut shavings
  • Almonds slivers
  • Pistachios
  • Chocolate ganache
  • Fresh sliced strawberries (premium)
  • Sliced bananas (premium)

The Sweetest Wedding Theme (pun intended) 🍦

Here’s the scoop on one of the sweetest wedding themes we’ve seen at La Venta Inn, ice cream! From the “Find Your Scoop” seating chart to florals-in-pints as center pieces, featuring a variety of flavors to distinguish different tables, there was ice cream decor galore – and, of course, the couple’s favorite ice cream brand via a custom ice cream package served by the Made by Meg Catering staff at 9pm (following an 8:30pm cake cutting).

As their love story began with their first date at an ice cream shop, they specifically requested the splendid ice cream brand Jeni’s from their catering specialist, and we always do our best to make wedding visions come true.
